This website has been created by the family of the late Tony Fitzmaurice of Ballybunion, Co. Kerry to show the many photographs he created from the 1950s to the 2000s. Tony was born in Ballybunion in 1932 and lived there until his death in June 2019. I was familiar with his photography all my life, as a small child his special dark-room partitioned from the bottom of the kitchen was a source of fascination. As an adult I became more aware of his photography as it was a hobby we shared and he was generous with his advice as I developed my interest. On holiday or at any event, public or private, Tony always had a camera at hand. To me he was a keen and accomplished amateur photographer. However it was only on his death in 2019, when his widow Madeline asked my family to look after his photography, that I found out about his life as a semi professional photographer between 1956 and 1962. His ledger recording details of his semi-professional photography business, co-existing alongside his job as a Kerry County Council employee, gives us a look at the work of a 1950/60s photographer. In addition to local events such as Confirmation Day in Ballybunion, the weddings of friends etc. he was resident photographer at Walsh’s Super Ballroom, Listowel.
I welcome assistance from any individuals or groups in the North Kerry area that might be able to help me identify the people in these photographs so I can reconnect the photographs with families and communities. If you can offer suggestions they will be gratefully received. Email [email protected]
