My family are pleased to hold the large collection of photographs created by the late Tony Fitzmaurice of Sandhill Rd, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Of particular interest are the early photographs from the 1950’s and 1960's that capture so well the town of Ballybunion along with the events and people of North Kerry. Old photographs are powerful tools, freezing a moment in the past to offer a glimpse of the social history of a place in a particular time and, often years later, unlocking memories of friends, places and events. Without even knowing the names of the people, these photographs nevertheless give me an insight into the Ballybunion of the 1950s. But how much richer the understanding would be if the people could be identified and the photographs reconnected with those people, their families or the communities depicted, what recollections might be brought to life.
I welcome assistance from any individuals, photographic, heritage or historical groups in the North Kerry area that might be able to help me identify the people in these photographs so I can reconnect the photographs with families and communities. If you can offer suggestions they will be gratefully received.
